AMD’s new processors could be faster and cheaper than Intel’s

AMD’s new processors could be faster and cheaper than Intel’s

AMD just unveiled their next generation Ryzen series of CPUs for desktops. The Ryzen processors are based on AMDs Zen core architecture which incorporates their SenseMI technology. Launching the processors, Dr Lisa Su, President and CEO of AMD said that it has been under development for the past four years, “with the goal to deliver unprecedented generational performance gains and return choice and innovation to the high-performance computing market.”

The much-anticipated processor lineup by AMD comes in three new families like Intel. Ryzen 3 is the cheapest of them all followed by the mid-range Ryzen 5 and the high-end Ryzen 7. The Ryzen processors have an increased 52 percent instructions per cycles (IPC) which puts it in line with the premium Intel processors.

AMDs Ryzen 3 and the Ryzen 5 will go on sale later this year but three processors under the Ryzen 7 series will be launched on March 2. The Ryzen 7 range of AMD processors consist of eight cores and support simultaneous multi-threading. The flagship version, Ryzen 7 1800X features a clock speed of 3.6 GHz which turbos up to 4.0 GHz and is priced at $499. Next up is the Ryzen 7 1700X which is clocked at 3.4 GHz and goes up to 3.9 GHz on turbo mode. The 1700X is priced a $399. The last chip of the lot is the Ryzen 1700 which runs on a base clock speed of 3.0 GHz and jumps up to 3.7 GHz.

AMD is betting high on the performance to price ratio and therefore has competitively priced the Ryzen chips lesser than Intel’s premium Core i7-6900K, at almost half the price. What’s even more exciting is the fact that AMD has claimed that their high-end Ryzen 7 1800X outperforms the Intel counterpart. But a real-world benchmark would only prove AMDs claims when the processors are made available on March 2.

So far there is no word on the Indian launch and availability.
